I am Donna Higgins Colson, professional artist and oil painter. As my home page statement acknowledges, pushing the color in my work is very important to me and my work is more expressionistic and painterly than literal. While I specialize in local flora and fauna of northeast North Carolina, including the Outer Banks, I tend to work on subject matter as the spirit moves me. I am currently working on more figurative paintings. | |

However, for the 18 months leading up to September 2006, I spent most of that time getting ready for a huge show with my colleague Shirley Ruff at the Festival Park Gallery on Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks. I created 24 oil paintings of birds, of which I showed 19–I sold the other 5 before I got them off the easel. I sold 5 more at the show. The rest of them, along with other works, are currently on exhibit at the galleries who represent my paintings (see the Gallery Pages).
For 2007, particularly the first half of the year, I am turning my attention to several scheduled shows (see the Events Page). While I generally work in larger formats (30"x40") and use gallery-wrapped canvases, where the paintings are wrapped around 1 ˝" edges and the works are exhibited without frames, I am getting ready for a “Small Painting” show in February at the Red Rabbit Gallery in Elizabeth City. I hope you will visit the galleries who exhibit my work and hop to see you at the openings of my upcoming events.
